WASHINGTON, DCThe Very Rev. Gary Hall, dean of Washington National Cathedral, has released the following statement upon news of the death of stained glass artist Rowan LeCompte.Rowan LeCompte

Everyone who has found inspiration in the grand stained glass windows of Washington National Cathedral and the great stories they tell has been blessed by the life of Rowan LeCompte, a talented artist who made his first window here as a teenager and continued designing these bold works for the next seventy years.

Rowan himself spoke of the Cathedral as for him “a magic place, filled with a degree of awesomeness and beauty and spirit” he had never experienced before. His many windows only increased those qualities at the Cathedral and will be his enduring legacy for generations yet unborn.

Rowan’s loved ones and all who worked with him knew the personal qualities that led to so many masterpieces in multicolored light. They are in our prayers.
