National Cathedral Celebrates the Life of J. Reilly Lewis

Washington National Cathedral joins in mourning the passing of J. Reilly Lewis, musical director of the Cathedral Choral Society, who entered into eternal rest on Thursday, June 9. Lewis was a constant presence at the Cathedral, a gifted musician and a humble servant of Jesus Christ.

“We grieve with Reilly Lewis’ family and all of Washington. We have lost a true maestro and friend,” said the Right Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde, Episcopal Bishop of Washington and Interim Dean of the Cathedral. “Countless musicians have known the gift of Reilly’s guiding hand and unfailing support. Untold thousands have been blessed by his artistry and generous spirit. We pray God’s mercy on all who are still attempting to absorb this devastating news, even as we prepare to honor his life with gratitude and awe.”

Canon Michael McCarthy, the Cathedral’s Director of Music, added: “I, like, many are numb at the news of Reilly’s Lewis’s passing. Seldom do we get to experience individuals who possess such a profoundly clear vocation yet have a gift and knack of sharing the very essence of that vocation so easily. Reilly’s passion and love for what he did was tangible, exciting and inspiring. It is no exaggeration to say that the city, the Cathedral Choral Society and its Cathedral home has lost one of its finest evangelists. Laus Deo Gloria.”

The thoughts and prayers of the Cathedral are with Reilly’s wife, Beth, and the extended family of the Cathedral Choral Society. Memorial service plans will be announced soon.
