Washington National Cathedral to Commemorate 25th Anniversary of Groundbreaking Bishop’s Legacy

WASHINGTON – Washington National Cathedral is hosting its annual Choral Evensong for the Bishop John T. Walker School for Boys (BWS), a tuition-free Episcopal school for low-income boys east of the Anacostia River and one of the schools in the Episcopal Diocese of Washington. This year’s service will commemorate the life and legacy of its namesake on the 25th anniversary of the bishop’s death on October 2, 2014 at 5:30 p.m.

Bishop Walker served as the first black Episcopal bishop of Washington and dean of Washington National Cathedral for more than a decade until his death in 1989. A passionate social justice activist, he was an outspoken advocate against racial discrimination and apartheid in South Africa.

The school founded in his honor continues in the bishop’s example of uniting diverse nations and faiths in the common cause of understanding and brotherhood. Bishop Walker believed strongly that education was the door to opportunity and the school that carries on that legacy seeks to provide that opportunity and change the lives of its students.

BWS welcomes children from all faith traditions and seeks to provide the environment and instruction needed for every boy to reach his full potential as a student, citizen and child of God.
